RECALL FOR BMW E46 3 SERIES CARS PRODUCED BETWEEN NOVEMBER 1997 AND JUNE 2000

Recently, vehicles from different vehicle manufacturers were recalled to replace driver’s front airbag module, equipped with a TAKATA Non Azide Driver Inflator (NADI) that may explode and cause serious injury or death.

    Vehicles concerned
    BMW 3series
    Models E46
    Production period: November 1997 – June 2000

If your vehicle was produced within above mentioned period your BMW may have a faulty TAKATA airbag.

It is critical that you urgently contact a BMW dealer to clarify, whether your vehicle is affected and if further steps are necessary.

Please take note that any replacement airbag installed in your vehicle following a collision or other incident may also be faulty.

    Details

As part of the ongoing quality analyses conducted at BMW, there have been indications that this type of gas generator (NADI) can leak in the long term. Our supplier has informed us about the pinpoint of the production period of the gas generators in case of which this fault pattern can appear.

This leak enables the propellant in the gas generator to absorb moisture. According to the present assumption, a high moisture absorption and if necessary an occurring re-drying over longer periods of time combined with a mechanical load (for example, rough road surfaces) can lead to a breakdown of the propellant. In this case, in the event of an accidental airbag deployment, a very high internal pressure in the gas generator can occur and in the worst case it can burst the gas generator and metal parts can cause possibly fatal injuries.
