A NEW LEVEL OF EFFICIENCY.
BMW EfficientDynamics in the BMW ActiveHybrid 5.
The BMW ActiveHybrid 5 combines innovations in a unique way: a comprehensive package of measures and technologies, from BMW EfficientDynamics, provides more driving pleasure with less emissions.
BMW TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder petrol engine
The BMW TwinPower Turbo engine features a lightweight design. With its TwinScroll turbocharger, it produces a mighty 225 kW (306 HP), resulting in a torque of 400 Nm and a top speed of 250 km/h. The BMW ActiveHybrid 5 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.9 seconds. And that with impressively low fuel consumption and emission values, ranging from 7.0 to 6.4 l/100 km and 163 to 149 g/km CO2 (all values in accordance with EU test cycle, depending on the tyre format selected).
The BMW ActiveHybrid 5 fulfils the EU6 emission norm as standard.Electric motor
The second component of the performance hybrid is the 40 kW electric motor. It can drive the car fully electrically up to a maximum speed of 60 km/h. It supports the combustion power train when overtaking, on uphill gradients and in other driving situations where spontaneous acceleration is required. The electric motor is powered by a lithium-ion high-performance battery via the rear axle.
INTELLIGENT ENERGY MANAGEMENT.
The BMW ActiveHybrid 5 utilises next-generation hybrid technology. Interaction between the ECO PRO Mode and numerous additional measures from BMW EfficientDynamics ensures maximum efficiency – without compromising on the vehicle’s dynamic driving qualities.

HYBRID START STOP FUNCTION.
The Hybrid Start Stop function switches off the combustion engine automatically as soon as the car is stationary. Key functions such as air conditioning are taken care of by the high-performance battery in this case. When the accelerator pedal is activated, the vehicle starts electrically. If more powerful acceleration is desired, the combustion engine is reactivated. The result: reduced fuel consumption and lower emissions.
ECO PRO MODE.
As soon as you switch to the ECO PRO Mode, everything is geared towards greater efficiency and depending on your individual driving style, this results in a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 20 per cent (according to an internal BMW fuel consumption study).
The additional functions of coasting (with automatic transmission only), preview assistant and ECO PRO Route (both with Navigation system Professional only) enable another five per cent of savings potential. This mode optimises accelerator and transmission response as well as shift points, and intelligently adapts the heating/air conditioning strategy. The Control Display shows you which EfficientDynamics technologies are currently lowering your fuel consumption. You’ll also receive ECO PRO tips that relate to your current driving situation to help you boost efficiency even further.
Coasting
Another feature of the ECO PRO Mode is the coasting function in combination with Steptronic transmission: if within a speed range of 50–160 km/h the driver takes their foot off the accelerator and does not brake, the system disconnects the engine and the car coasts – i.e. rolls without engine power.
Preview assistant
The preview assistant in conjunction with Navigation system Professional is an especially innovative highlight of ECO PRO Mode. Based on navigation data, it detects bends, built-up areas, roundabouts, T junctions, speed limits and motorway exits along the route and is able to give you tips in advance to enable you to reduce speed early on. The proactive driving assistant also efficiently controls the coasting function.
ECO PRO Route
ECO PRO Mode also includes ECO PRO Route which combines with the new generation of Navigation system Professional to draw on various parameters such as individual driving style as well as the current traffic situation and road conditions to calculate the most fuel-efficient route. The on-board computer displays your bonus mileage, in other words how many additional kilometres you have gained from using ECO PRO Mode.
AERODYNAMICS.
The entire vehicle design is testament to the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy. The optimised, aerodynamic front apron and undercarriage feature innovative improvements that reduce air resistance and fuel consumption.
The entire front section embodies the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy, including the newly designed front apron. The optimised design of the cooling air inlets also contributes to improved aerodynamics - thereby reducing air resistance. The same applies to the wheel arches, which are specially designed to reduce air swirl.
The flat undercarriage cover, which also shields the engine compartment, is an additional detail that greatly improves the car’s aerodynamics. This new cover is not only advantageous in terms of aerodynamics: it also improves sound insulation and provides greater protection from rust.
BRAKE ENERGY REGENERATION.
Every time the driver brakes or decelerates, kinetic energy is released for storage in a high-performance battery in the BMW ActiveHybrid 5. It can then be re-used later as drive power. This saves fuels since the energy is not lost. As soon as you take your foot off the accelerator or apply the brakes, Brake Energy Regeneration uses the energy released to charge the battery. This energy from the high-performance battery is used to provide a short boost of additional power when accelerating. As a result, less strain is placed on the engine and emissions are reduced significantly. The result is reduced fuel consumption and increased performance – classic BMW EfficientDynamics.
AIR VENT CONTROL.
The air vent control uses a sensor which continuously determines the degree of cooling required by the engine during travel. It is no longer necessary for the radiator to provide a permanent flow of air. The air flaps open and close depending on the conditions and outdoor temperature, improving aerodynamics and shortening the engine warm-up phase. This reduces fuel consumption.
